Cards on the table; I’m not sure how this one will go in terms of a winner. Luzern look very confident, and almost good enough to trouble their hosts. However, a defeat against St.Gallen may have affected their confidence enough to see them drop back just a little. If they engage Young Boys Bern from the word “go” in an attacking frenzy, the home side will win; that’s how games at the Wankdorf go, particularly because of the artificial turf. However, if Luzern box a little more cleverly (don’t worry – they can’t defend) then they may score a positive result here, particularly with their hosts likely to be preparing for their UEFA Europa League outing next week.

Unlike their main title rivals Basel, Young Boys Bern don’t have the depth in their squad to cope with a European campaign. They can cope in midfield, but they can’t cope in defence, or in attack; they don’t have enough bodies. Unfortunately for the capital club, their style requires certain types of players, and if they fit into the system, they look good. If they don’t, however, it goes horribly wrong, and Young Boys Bern will get turned over. The home team do not have a “Plan B”; they only know how to attack. A team like Luzern does suit Young Boys Bern, though, because it gives them the scope to attack free space, and score goals as a result. They’re good at that. Defensively speaking, though, Young Boys Bern are usually all over the plate, especially because of their high defensive line. That’s why it’s hard to trust Young Boys Bern to win games; they’re never able to keep a team out. Take their 7-2 win against Lausanne Sport the other week, for example. On paper, it looks like a massacre, but that isn’t really what happened. Young Boys Bern were more clinical than Lausanne Sport, and their superior individuals made sure that the victory was theirs. Make no mistake, though – Lausanne Sport created bundles of chances; they just didn’t take enough of them.

Now, Luzern play the same way as Lausanne Sport, but they’re a lot more effective than newly-promoted Lausanne Sport. Schneuwly and Juric are not great, but they’re both solid and reasonably mobile forwards with bags of strength and aerial ability, so a playmaker like Hyka (who is in terrific form!) can wreak havoc, and should be able to do so here. I don’t think that Juric and Schneuwly have an ounce of class between them; they’re very orthodox strikers. However, they’re both good at playing that way, so with the right service, Luzern won’t find it hard to score goals. They’ve had a great campaign thus far – at least until their bizarre defeat at St.Gallen – and they should enter this game with confidence. If they do, they’ll trouble Young Boys Bern because they only know how to attack, and that’s how to irk Young Boys Bern.

On paper, Young Boys Bern should win this game. However, if they rotate their squad, then Luzern are good enough to beat them here. That’s why the 1×2 market is a “no go” for me. I’ll be amazed if there aren’t goals in this game, though – these two sides couldn’t keep a cow out, and their last three head-to-head meetings have all cruised over 3.5 goals.

Over 3.5 goals at 11/10. Why not bet on this game now at Bet365?
